Description

About the Program

Education is something that happens at all stages of our lives, not just in childhood. It allows us to develop our thoughts and ideas, progress in our careers, and learn more about the world in which we live.

Whether your interest lies in working with children with special educational needs, working in a museum as an educator, youth work, professional development in a private organization, or making a contribution to the wider field of education, a BA in Education Studies will give you a strong grounding for your career.

The degree is also excellent preparation for postgraduate teacher education and further study at the master’s level.

An education studies degree at Bahçeşehir Cyprus University offers you a breadth of study, but also provides direction, by giving you three possible pathways to pursue:

Working in Education. This route will prepare you well for graduate employment in schools and other educational settings.

Diversity and Inclusion in Education. The ideal pathway for graduate professional work, giving you the skills to work with the diversity of students that attend mainstream schools but also in more of a specialist unit or a central, local, or private organization.

Researching Education. This a good route if you are considering further training or academic study. You’ll be well qualified to investigate issues and concerns as a professional working in a variety of organizations (such as schools, higher education colleges, and charities in the voluntary or public sector).

You will gain a broad and balanced knowledge of the principal features of education and the debates within educational theory, policy, and practice.

You will undertake a professional work placement, to gain valuable experience in the workplace, and put the theory you have learned at Bahçeşehir Cyprus University into practice.

ELT Program Learning Outcomes

In preparing our students to meet the challenges of their future work as educators, the Education Studies minor will:

1. Provide opportunities for students to explore different domestic and international educational models and philosophies;

2. Encourage students to formulate their own educational philosophy and reflect on the connections between content knowledge and pedagogical approaches;

3. Teach students how individual learners develop and help students understand the impact of individual learning differences;

4. Expose students to issues of privilege, power, and difference and their intersection with issues of education;

5. Help students become aware of how learners are affected by environmental factors;

6. Expose students to the ways different academic disciplines approach issues of education;

7. Make students aware of codes of ethical conduct and professional organizations that advocate for learners and on behalf of educational policy and practice;

8. Provide coursework and fieldwork opportunities necessary for those students wishing to meet teacher preparation or graduate school requirements.

Structure

Years one and two

  • Study current issues and debates in early childhood and education, and investigate the notion of research, with a particular focus on social and cultural issues.
  • Examine the basic concepts of developmental social and cognitive psychology, from infancy to adolescence, and begin to understand how these concepts inform teaching and learning.
  • Learn about some of the most significant developments that have occurred in education in the 20th and 21st centuries.
  • Become a self-sufficient and confident student able to complete your studies efficiently and effectively.
  • Develop the emotional intelligence, interpersonal, and reflection skills needed to become a successful professional within schools, higher education, education publishing and other institutions.

Years three and four

  • Build on the knowledge gained in your years one and two modules.
  • Choose to follow a particular pathway that will prepare you for your chosen career:

The Working in Education pathway will set you up well for working in schools but also learning beyond the classroom, in museums, galleries, youth projects, voluntary organizations, professional development, and higher education. You will explore and examine how educationalists can improve pupils’ well-being and learning by understanding how social influences and, in particular, early experiences, emotions, and emotional literacy, can facilitate learning.

On the Diversity and Inclusion in Education pathway, you will investigate key ethical dilemmas, rights, and responsibilities in education, diversity and multiculturalism, youth participation and identity, and examine the learning needs and inclusion of children with special educational needs.

The Researching Education pathway covers issues in education such as exclusion from school, or selective education, and ethical dilemmas, rights, and responsibilities. You will develop the capacity for logical reasoning, writing, and methods of investigation, highly relevant in education institutions and other organizations that need to address and resolve everyday challenges.
